Foster became Vice President for Professional Practice at the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and Affiliates in July 2009 after previously holding a tenure track position as a counselor educator. She is a National Certified Counselor (NCC), National Certified School Counselor (NCSC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Supervising Counselor (SC). "Professional Counseling: Today and Tomorrow" It will include a celebration of Minnesota's victory! Along with information on VA, Medicare, Tricare, benefits of credentialing, and challenges facing our profession. Featured Speaker: Mary Louise Wise, Ph.D. Mary Louise Wise lives in the Twin Cities where she coordinated a private practice for 20+ years. Her practice specialty areas include individual therapy regarding long-term effects of trauma experiences and supervision of therapists. "Humanizing Historical Traumatization" This presentation will offer several views of historical traumatization: transgenerational story lines; collective and cultural trauma; and the long shadows of traumatization through human history. Included will be best practices by therapists working with trauma survivors. Featured Speaker: Chia-Chen Tu and Kay Wahl, Ph.D. Chia-Chen Tu is a doctoral student in Counseling and Student Personnel, Dept. of Ed. Psych, University of MN, and Kay Wahl is the supervising faculty with the same department. "Vicarious Traumatization in Therapists Working with Survivors of Common and Sexual Trauma". This presentation discusses the effects of working with trauma survivors on the professional. Featured Speaker: Anastasia Sullwold-Ristau, Ph.D., L.P. is a licensed psychologist who specializes in pediatric and clinical child psychology. One area of expertise is working with children and families coping with highly stressful situations, such as those affected by acute or chronic medical issues. Her professional roles include psychological assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with chronic illnesses, chronic and acute pain, medical procedural distress, toileting issues, depression, anxiety, ADHD, psychosomatic or stress-related disorders, high functioning-developmental disabilities and behavioral disorders. "Fostering Resilience by Teaching Children Self-Regulation Skills" This break-out session will introduce the attendees to the utility of training children and their families to use self-regulation skills on a regular basis. Trauma can take on many forms for children, teenagers, and their families. Approaching this from the standpoint of skill building empowerment is likely to foster resiliency in a long-lasting manner. Focus of this breakout session will be upon igniting interest of the counselor in finding creative and pragmatic ways to incorporate these essential "life skills" into a busy professional practice. An opportunity to register for separate in-depth training workshop designed to teach the counselor specific means of shaping self-regulation skills with children and families will also be offered, as interest dictates. Featured Speaker: Heather Goochey, M.S., LPC "Trauma associated with Reactive Attachment Disorder and the use of Corrective Attachment Therapy" This presentation discusses best practices therapeutic approach when working with traumatized children.
